5th Annual Lee County Awards Banquet
The Harborview Event Center was all a-buzz with excitement on Saturday, April 20, 2013 as guests arrived to celebrate the achievement of 54 new and 55 previous Carson Scholars.
The Edison Park Chamber Group string ensemble directed by Lisa Pennington performed as the newest scholars processed into the banquet hall. Scholars remained in place for the pledge of allegiance, giving us all a chance to glory in their accomplishments! The pledge was led by 2013 Carson Scholar, Raegan Denny, who also sang a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
Emceeing again this year, was Marshall Bower, Esq., President and CEO of The Foundation for Lee County Public School. Mr. Marshall welcomed everyone and introduced guest speaker, John Sheppard.
Guinness Book of World Records holder, John Sheppard is known for his special way with words through his books. He did not disappoint with his inspiring words of appreciation of things we take for granted and blessing the food, the families and the mission to enable young people to develop themselves to realize their full potential.
After lunch, educator, real estate developer, and philanthropist, Dr. Bill Frey shared his thoughts on the Carson Scholars Fund and its impact in Lee County. He then introduced his dear friend and keynote speaker, Dr. Ben Carson.
Dr. Carson’s message began with his thanks not only to the scholars for their dedicated and many times sacrificial efforts to obtain the highest academic scores, but included his thanks to their parents, grandparents and mentors, as well as their educators, mentors and the donors and sponsors. “We need you” was his take home point to the scholars, “to develop yourselves to be the best you can be, so that you can solve the problems of our society”. And the best days can still be ahead of us!
During the award presentations, as each scholar approached the podium, Mr. Bower called out their name and acquainted us with some of their interests, giving us an even greater appreciation for these future leaders! Dr. and Mrs. Frey along with Dr. and Mrs. Carson congratulated the new scholars as they crossed the stage.
Many thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Bill Frey, The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, and all our wonderful supporters.
