As the site of our national headquarters, Maryland has the oldest and largest regional chapter. Each year, the Maryland Awards Banquet honors both Maryland-area winners and Carson Scholars from around the country.

Maryland Chapter in 2016:

  • 228 New Carson Scholars in 2016
  • 336 Recognized Scholars in 2016
  • 3,495 total Carson Scholars from the Mid-Atlantic region, with 3,339 from Maryland

Alumni Spotlight

Lisa Thomas, M.D.

Lisa is a 1999 Carson Scholar who was dedicated to pursuing her dream of working in medicine.  She earned her B.S. in neuroscience and graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York University. She went on to graduate with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and impressively, was one of four university students to win the 2005 Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Young Investigator’s Day Ehrlich Award. In 2011, Lisa completed her post graduate training program in the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency and served as Chief Resident from 2010-2011. This included training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital & Massachusetts Hospital. Lisa’s commitment to the sciences earned her a position working as an Attending Emergency Physician at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. She is married to Dr. Mathew Thomas and is the mother of three beautiful children, Maria, Michael and Sophia.

The 18th Annual Maryland Awards Banquet

What an amazing evening honoring our 2014 Carson Scholars! On Sunday, April 6th, 2014 the Carson Scholars Fund gathered at Martin’s West in Baltimore for the 18th Annual Awards Banquet. Legendary newscaster Sam Donaldson served as Master of Ceremonies.  Guests heard inspiring remarks from Kirk Cameron, television and film actor; Aubrey Chernick, philanthropist and technology entrepreneur; and Brooks Robinson, All-Star third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles.  Most important, congratulations to all of our new and returning scholars for a job well done! Read more.
