Announcing Changes to Previous Scholar Policies
Please note that applications for 2010 Previous Scholar Recognition were due postmarked to the Carson Scholars Fund office on January 6, 2010.
The principle purpose of the Carson Scholars Fund is to recognize and reward high academic achievement in The Carson Scholars Fund board has struggled with this dilemma, and after much consideration, deliberation, and discussion, a decision was made to change the repeat scholar policy. The board determined that it was much more important to acknowledge the accomplishments of each and every scholar who meets the requirements for repeat scholarship. Knowing how extremely bright previous scholars are, the Carson Scholars Fund recognizes that previous scholars will most likely have scholarship monies from several sources. However, the prestige of being a multiple winner of the Carson Scholarship is a facet of your academic career that could boost your academic reputation in a special way. Therefore, to ensure that Carson Scholars no longer go unrewarded for their superior academic and humanitarian achievement, there have been changes to the "repeat scholar policy and procedure.” Please keep in mind that all previous financial awards for repeat scholars will be honored. However, starting with the 2010 scholarship cycle: I. Prior winners are able to renew their status as a Carson Scholar each year using the following procedure: A. Prior winners will be asked to: 1. submit their first semester grades 2. meet the GPA requirement of 3.75 3. provide a list of their community service and humanitarian activities B. Prior winners meeting these criteria: 1. will be notified of their scholar status renewal 2. will receive a commemorative pin to attach to the ribbon of their original medal 3. will receive a certificate of achievement suitable for framing II. We believe it is important for our repeat Carson Scholars to be recognized in their school and community. Therefore, the school: A. will be sent notification of the scholar's renewed status B. will continue to receive a trophy (or nameplate) to recognize the scholars who have been honored (and re-honored) by the award each year III. With this new policy, applications for recognition as a 2010 Carson Scholar will be sent to previous scholars’ home addresses in mid-November. If you have any questions or concerns about this policy please contact Scholarship Director, Caitlin Kosec, by calling 410-828-1005 or emailing caitlin@carsonscholars.org.
Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Changes to Previous Scholar Policies
Why has this policy been changed? With the number of new scholars increasing to over 500 per year, the competition for the repeat scholars has risen almost exponentially. The magnitude of the program, with 3,900 scholarships given in 34 states, has expanded robustly to a point where we are unable to continue current previous scholar policies. While our organization strongly desires to reward each and every scholar who meets the very stringent requirements for the repeat award, our funding simply cannot keep up with the demand, and our judges have had to make some extremely tough decisions, with the repeat winners winning by an extremely narrow margin. Our board has struggled with this dilemma, and has decided to no longer allow deserving Carson Scholars to go unrewarded for their superior academic and humanitarian achievement. Therefore, the board has enacted changes to the repeat scholar policy and procedure as outlined in your scholar letter.
I received this letter and I am unsure about the changes to your policy. Are we no longer able to apply for another $1,000
Unfortunately, previous scholars will no longer be eligible to apply for additional scholarship funds to add to their original award. The Carson Scholars Fund board determined that it was much more important to acknowledge the accomplishments of each and every scholar who meets the requirements for repeat scholarship, rather than let academic achievement go unrewarded due to financial constraints.
Previous scholars will be able to apply for a special recognition package. Scholars meeting the application requirements will be honored with a special recognition package consisting of notification of their scholar status renewal, commemorative pin to attach to the ribbon of their original medal, and a certificate of achievement suitable for framing. Their school will be sent notification of the scholar's renewed status and will continue to receive a trophy (or nameplate) to recognize the scholars who have been honored (and re-honored) by the award each year.
Will our previous awards still be honored? Will my award continue to accrue interest?
Yes, all previous financial awards for repeat scholars will be honored. All previous financial awards will continue to accrue interest as determined each year by the Carson Scholars Fund board. What will the new application look like? When will it be sent?
Prior winners will be sent a previous scholar application to reapply for the previous scholar recognition package each year until 12th grade. This application will be abbreviated, and will ask scholars to submit their first semester grades to determine if they meet the GPA requirement of 3.75, and will also ask scholars to provide a list of their community service and humanitarian activities. Previous scholars meeting these qualifications will be honored with a special recognition package consisting of notification of their scholar status renewal, commemorative pin to attach to the ribbon of their original medal, and a certificate of achievement suitable for framing. Their school will be sent notification of the scholar's renewed status and will continue to receive a trophy (or nameplate) to recognize the scholars who have been honored (and re-honored) by the award each year. Please note that an essay will no longer be required as part of the application for previous scholars. Applications will be sent to your home address in mid-November. If my child meets the criteria, will they still be invited to the regional Because our previous scholars have already had the opportunity to attend an Awards Banquet and we anticipate high numbers of previous scholars to qualifying for multiple time recognition, we are still determining if we can accomodate multiple time scholars at our Awards Banquets. We do hope to invite previous scholars to additional future events to recognize their accomplishments. I understand the changes to your policy, and I think my child would have qualified for this recognition multiple times. Can you retroactively look at their applications and provide a letter to their colleges stating that they met these qualifications in the past? On request, we can look back at scholar’s applications from 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 to determine if they would have qualified for a Carson Scholar recognition. Please send all requests to caitlin@carsonscholars.org. We can then send a letter stating that the scholar met that qualifications, but we were unable to finance their award due to financial constraints. We can only retroactively review applications that were received during the 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 scholarship cycle.
