All for Future Leaders

Dr. Garth McDonald and his engaging wife Jennifer hosted a beautiful event in their charming home in Phoenix, MD on the evening of May 10. These dear friends of longtime Carson Scholar supporters, Eddie and Sylvia Brown, had more than 50 attendees drinking in the enchanting setting as the sun slowly sank behind the forest encircled site, as they partook of various culinary delights.

The speaker of the evening was none other than Dr. Ben Carson, co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund. His informal talk stretched from the precarious state of our nation, to the opportunities to make a difference to improve our plight. With our students coming in at a dismal 21st place out of 22 in a survey with respect to math and science aptitudes, the crisis was very apparent. This was the impetus behind the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes and rewards high academic achievement and demonstrated humanitarian qualities. By doing so, the ripple effect produced even more students striving to be the best they can be academically! It started with 25 scholarships 14 years ago, and now has over 4,300 scholar awards in 42 states. Candy Carson spoke on the effect of the Ben Carson Reading Rooms, and how the comprehension levels and test scores have risen as a result of the other "arm" of the organization.

During the question and answer period, a local engineering firm partner, Fred Mirmiran challenged everyone with a very generous match of $50,000. Thanks to his generous leadership, and the McDonalds’ behind the scenes support, the match was met.
