Four thousand eight hundred scholarships and counting...

California

An enormous solar cube visible from the freeway and a model of the space shuttle "Endeavor" welcomed guests to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California on May 12, 2011.  This year, twenty-eight first-time Carson Scholars and twelve Previous Scholars, representing seven states, were invited to the West Coast Awards Ceremony.  Guests converged on this family-fun venue featuring hands-on displays depicting gravity, force, tornadoes, waves and currents, and many other scientific phenomenons. Beakers of blow pops and flasks of gumballs adorned each table, along with photographs of the winning scholars.      Carl Ballton, President of the Union Bank Foundation, welcomed guests to the 2nd Carson Scholars Fund West Coast Awards Ceremony hosted by Union Bank. The West Coast Banquet was CSF’s 7th regional awards banquet this spring. A very poised Jade Porter, 8th grade scholar from Union City, California, led the pledge.  After a heartfelt blessing delivered by Sebastian Reyes, a 2011 Carson Scholar from endowed school Serra Catholic, guests headed to a huge buffet and enjoyed dinner.    Lawrence Henry, Market President for Union Bank, reinforced Dr. Carson’s message of promoting academic excellence, and shared that he considers Dr. Carson to be a hero and role model.   California Secondary Education was well represented by David Naime with University of California, Irvine, and Dawn Valencia, with Cal State Fullerton. The speakers’ remarks inspired and motivated the college-bound scholars to seek the most that they can from their college education.    CSF Chairman of the Board, Lee Warner, initiated the ceremonial portion of the evening with remarks citing that more than 90 cents of every dollar donated goes to CSF programs.  He called 11th grader Catherine Miller to the stage to read her inspirational essay about “Beauty 4 Life”, her endeavor to assist Ugandan women and children.  Catherine’s compassionate message was very moving.    Next, Mr. Warner showed a clip from “Gifted Hands”, the movie about Dr. Carson’s life, followed by a message recorded by Dr. Carson addressing all the scholars and guests.  Dr. Carson reminded the group that “the person who has the most to do with your success is you!”   Lee Warner then shared each scholar’s accomplishments and called them forward.  Students were escorted to the stage by Union Bank Managers and awarded their medals by Union Bank’s Lawrence Henry and their certificates by David Naime and Dawn Valencia.  Previous Scholars were also called forward to receive their pins and certificates, and were honored for maintaining their high standards.  A group photograph was taken to commemorate this important evening honoring our West Coast academic superstars.     Sincere thanks to Joanne Curran, Kara Keeley and all the Union Bank volunteers who made this evening a memorable success.
