Greater Philadelphia Chapter Has Successful Fundraiser!

On Thursday, May 19, 2011 Dr. and Mrs. Ben Carson joined a group of supporters in the Greater Philadelphia community for a special evening of fun, information-sharing and fundraising to benefit the local chapter of the Carson Scholars Fund.

This first fundraiser for the Chapter was held at Manufacturer’s Golf and Country Club in Fort Washington, PA and featured the opportunity to meet several of the Carson Scholars from local schools as well as a silent auction of forty unique items. Guests were able to bid throughout the evening on their personal favorites. After a very inspiring introduction by Ms. Christina Santhouse, a former patient of Dr. Carson, attendees were treated to a stimulating address by Dr. Carson, regarding the growing educational crisis in American schools and the significant challenges faced by our American primary and secondary students.

Special thanks to Carson Scholar greeters Michael Amoako, Destiny Hemsey, Jenna O'Boyle, and Treycjon Solomon.

This successful evening was hosted by the Greater Philadelphia Chapter representatives, John Green and Mike Cosack.  If you are interested in joining the Greater Philadelphia Chapter as a member or a volunteer for future projects please contact either John Green at jwcwgreen@verizon.net  or Michael Cosack at cosackm@verizon.net.

The Greater Philadelphia Region

The Greater Philadelphia Chapter was founded in the fourth quarter of 2008, through the efforts of John Green and Michael Cosack. In spring 2009 the chapter awarded two Carson Scholarships to fourth grader Treycjon Solomon of Samuel K. Faust Elementary and sixth grader Valeria Ochoa, a student at Lafayette Elementary.

In his essay, Treycjon highlighted his desire to take his fellow students to a homeless shelter to demonstrate where they might end up without an education. Dedicated to excellence, Treycjon mentions winning the scholarship as motivation to continue to strive for academic excellence, "It shows me if you do hard work you can achieve many things."

Valeria recognizes the worth of the scholarship's contribution towards her goal of becoming a doctor. "It will help me pay for tuition or books," the driven twelve year old said of the 1,000 dollar start towards her college education, "I always wanted to go to college and I want to make a difference some day."

The short-term goal of the chapter is to fund and award a Carson Scholarship for every school in the Bucks County School District with a long term vision of discovering the promise of the youth throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.
