Heritage Christian School

Canton, OH

It was a crisp October morning when the Ben Carson Reading Room opened at Heritage Christian School in Canton, Ohio.

donorsThis is the second reading room to be located in the Buckeye State; however, it’s the first reading room to be located in Stark County.  To celebrate the joyous occasion, students, teachers and special guest gathered in the auditorium and were welcomed by interim administrator, Charles Riddle.  Next members of the secondary choir regaled the guests by singing the school’s Alma Mater. Following the choir, Dr. Ben Carson delivered a prerecorded greeting.  Dr. Carson reminisced about his early educational experiences and reminded students that “the person who has the most to do with your success is you.”

Reading room coordinator Tammy Blazenyak represented the Carson Scholars Fund.  Tammy thanked Bob and Jackie Gill for sponsoring the reading room and for sharing their love of literacy with the Heritage Christian School community.  Bob Gill, accompanied by his wife Jackie, spoke next.  Mr. Gill shared some of the school’s accomplishments and expressed his gratitude to the teachers and administrators for creating an environment where children can grow and thrive both academically and spiritually.

Immediately following the program, guests were escorted to the reading room.  Hundreds of students lined the hallways waving their favorite books as guests paraded by. Once inside the reading room, guests were in awe.

boy readingHeritage Christian School serves students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.  To accommodate the students, the school designed two areas – one space for primary students and a separate area for secondary students.  The primary space features a large faux tree complete with a tree fort.  If you look in the branches you can see blue birds and other whimsical animals.  Primary students can lounge in bean bag chairs or stretch out in a multi-colored tent. The secondary area has the feel of a coffee shop which is guaranteed to entice the older, more mature reader.  Giant overstuffed chairs allow students to feel relaxed as they delve into more complex literature. Between the two spaces, students can explore over 1,100 books.

THINK BIG

Thank you Bob and Jackie Gill for sponsoring the Ben Carson Reading Room at Heritage Christian School.
