Prospective Scholars

The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. An interested student must be nominated by the principal at their school to be able to compete for a Carson Scholarship.

Frequently Asked Questions by Prospective Scholars and their Families:

1. How do I apply to become a Carson Scholar?

Students interested in applying for the Carson Scholarships must be nominated by their schools in order to compete for scholarship. Because of this nomination process, applications can only be requested by educators. Applications are then only sent directly to schools. Individuals are not sent applications unless they are a parent or guardian of a previous scholar.  At this time, our school nomination procedures do not allow homeschooled students to apply for the scholarship program.

2. Can I download, fax, or obtain an application by email?

The Carson Scholarships can only be obtained through the original paper copies sent directly to the schools.

3. Does my school receive a Carson Scholarship application? If not, how can they obtain one?

Please note that an application can not be requested for a particular student at a school. Instead, we encourage educators to pick the best candidate to compete for the opportunity.

All public schools in Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia receive Carson Scholarship applications each year. An extensive number of Maryland private schools also receive our application annually.

Schools across the country receive our scholarship applications by request or are supported by our local chapters. Please consult your school’s guidance counselor or administrator to see if your school has received an application in the past.

If a school is not on our mailing list, please communicate your interest in having the school participate in the program by contacting an educator, guidance counselor, or administrator at your school. Suggest that they request an application for your school by contacting Caitlin@CarsonScholars.org and following the instructions on the Request an Application section of our website.

4. How many students can be nominated by their school for the Carson Scholarship?

Only one student per school can be nominated for the Carson Scholarship. Each school has a different selection process to determine which student would make the best candidate for the award.

5. My child was selected by their school to be their nominee but now the application has been misplaced. Can I still apply?

Schools must request an additional application to be sent in extreme circumstances when the original application has been lost or damaged. Requests for additional applications will be processed if all other routes of locating the application have been exhausted, and there is enough advanced notice to resend an application by regular mail within the scholarship deadline.
