About Our Reading Rooms

The Ben Carson Reading Project is the second program of the Carson Scholars Fund.  The primary purpose of the program is to provide funding and support to local schools so that they can create a nurturing environment for a child to feel safe and secure as they develop their reading skills.  The Reading Room is decorated with attractive, eye catching artwork based on Dr. Carson's "THINK BIG" philosophy.  Each room is filled with hundreds of books for students to explore from a variety of authors, topics, and genres.  The Ben Carson Reading Project brings students and their families together to raise the awareness of the importance of reading.  The Ben Carson Reading Project nutures the entire school and allows students to develop the skills necessary to become lifetime readers and learners.

The first Ben Carson Reading Room was established in 2000 at Hall's Cross Roads Elementary School in Aberdeen, Maryland.  Since that time, the Carson Scholars Fund has established 44 Reading Rooms.  Reading Rooms can be found in Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland. Missouri, and Pennsylvania.  To visit some of our Reading Rooms, view the Our Sites page.

Since the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, four new Reading Room have been created.  Bank of America is proud to sponsor Reading Rooms in the following Baltimore City Public Schools:  Franklin Square Elementary/Middle, John Eager Howard Elementary, and Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle.  The Kellogg Company is also proud to sponsor a Ben Carson Reading Room at Urbandale Elementary School in Battle Creek, Michigan.  The Urbandale Elementary Reading Room is the first Reading Room located in Dr. Carson's home state of Michigan.
