     Inspired fifth grader Shawn Tazewell credits the hard work of his mother for his success. While working three jobs, his mother, Sonya, went back to school to finish her education. “Whatever you want, need or desire you can have if you work hard,” says Shawn of his mother’s dedication. All that hard work has certainly benefited this Carson Scholar. With high remarks from his teachers about his appetite for knowledge and willingness to read and learn, Shawn is a distinguished young man.  He devotes most of his time to his studies and to giving back to his community through volunteer efforts including working with the Salvation Army and participating in the youth anti-drug campaign, “Dover’s Caring Community.” Shawn is well on his way to his goal of becoming a doctor, and he is a shining example of a Carson Scholar.

Christopher is an accomplished student that understands the importance of giving back to his community.  Christopher is described as an exceptional student by his teachers, and he remains dedicated to maintaining his perfect 4.0 grade point average.  This motivated Carson Scholars organized a collection of new and used eye glasses to donate to the Loins Club Recycle for Sight program.  Christopher organized the effort by making flyers, appearing on announcements, and meeting with school administrators to ensure that people from underprivileged countries could benefit from the gift of sight.  Christopher enjoys running, soccer, and is a member of the student government association.  

Nathaniel Horn

Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and hungry for knowledge are a few of the words used to describe 2007 Carson Scholar, Nathaniel Horn. During his free time Nathaniel loves to read and sometimes that includes reading during recess. According to his teacher, he has a very adult work ethic. He tackles every new task with enthusiasm and does not stop working until the task is complete. Nathaniel enjoys Boy Scouts and has earned the "Arrow of Light" award in Cub Scouts. He is actively involved in church activities and has been involved in community theater as well as sports. He hopes to have a career in the science field.

Josiah Taylor

     Labeled positive and well rounded by his teachers, Josiah is a two-time Carson Scholar. Josiah has worked hard to give back to his community by volunteering for the Science Center and with his youth group at his local Church. Josiah is looking forward to becoming an architect or an engineer. What is Josiah’s reason for studying hard and getting good grades? So that he can help others succeed.  Soaring into his future, Josiah is working toward obtaining his pilots license before he turns sixteen.

Zoe Grubbs

     Seventh grader Zoe Grubbs is a giving and caring Carson Scholar with an “enthusiastic desire to learn.” Zoe manages to balance academics with community service, maintaining a high grade point average while participating in such service endeavors as the Service Action Creativity and Knowledge program at her school and fundraising events for Autism Awareness. Two-time Carson Scholar “loves to do things to help other people and takes pleasure in their satisfaction.”  With her giving spirit, voracious desire to read and her dedication to exploration, this Carson Scholar is sure to go far!
