Gerry Camarena
Baltimore, MD
Grade 9

     Gerry is a two-time Carson Scholar from Baltimore, MD.  This past year, Gerry was honored as his middle school’s “Student of the Year.”  Gerry is fluent in Spanish and is beginning his third year in French.  He recently competed in the "Le Grand Concours" -An Annual National French Contest sponsored by the American Teachers of French where he placed 4th in the state and 5th in the country.  Gerry is in the All County Honors Orchestra and was First Chair in the Honors Orchestra for violin.  In his spare time, Gerry has participated in Project Clean Stream, served Thanksgiving meals to the elderly, collected toys for Toys-for-Tots, participated in a food drive and is a Boy Scout.  One day Gerry hopes to become an aerospace engineer. 

John Domonkos
Baltimore, MD
Grade 11

     John is a record seven-time Carson Scholar recipient who has a long list of academic, extracurricular, and community accomplishments.  Currently, John is enrolled in all Gifted and Talented and Advanced Placement classes and carries a 4.9 grade point average.  John embodies what it truly means to be a Carson Scholar;  His teachers describe him as self-motivated, responsible, and hard working.  Outside of the classroom, John participates in soccer, baseball and indoor track.  He is also a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society which participates in community service projects throughout the year.  In the future, John hopes to become an engineer.  

Darcy Yankowich
New Haven, CT
Grade 11

     With a perfect 4.0 grade point average, Carson Scholar Darcy Yankowich is on the road to success. Darcy is a hard-working student who is “reflective about her own learning, perceptively indentifying her own strengths and challenges.” Balancing a full curriculum with challenging upper level course including Spanish and Latin, Darcy is also dedicated to her volunteer work at her local recreational camp where she positively influences her peers.  Darcy has goals of becoming an anesthesiologist.

Joseph Athey
Carroll County, MD
Grade 5

     Carson Scholar Joseph Athey has taken volunteering to a new level. While in kindergarten, Joseph was encouraged by his teacher to do something good for someone without expecting anything in return.  Joseph came up with a plan: He would, with the help of his parents, bake, bag, and sell cookies to raise money to buy toys for less fortunate children.  Joseph continues this wildly successful charity every year around the winter holiday season and has given over $2,000 worth of toys to the Middletown Valley People Helping People organization. This busy Carson Scholar hasn’t lost sight of his studies through all of his volunteering though, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average and starting on his path to become an engineer for NASA.

Sopagna Peak
Baltimore, MD
Grade 9

Sopagna is a 2007 Carson Scholar recipient with exceptional writing abilities who enjoys writing poems and stories. Recently, one of her poems was awarded and published. She is an avid reader who enjoys reading different genres of books. She has participated in story telling at numerous festivals to encourage younger children to read. Sopagna is involved in her school's S.H.O.P. (students helping other people) program, where she and other members encourage others to lead a drug-free life. Her hobbies include jogging, biking, and board games. She hopes to continue her academic excellence and aspires to become a lawyer.
