The Carson Scholars Fund supports two main initiatives: Carson Scholarships and the Ben Carson Reading Project. Our scholarship program awards students who have embraced high levels of academic excellence and community service with $1,000 college scholarships. The Ben Carson Reading Project provides funding to schools to build and maintain Ben Carson Reading Rooms – warm, inviting rooms where children can discover the joy of independent leisure reading.
In 1996, the first year that scholarships were awarded, 25 deserving students were recognized as scholars. Through the generosity of our donors and partners, we are now able to award more than 500 scholarships annually. In total, we have awarded more than 6,200 scholarships across the country. More than 1,300 Carson Scholars have been recognized for their academic and humanitarian achievements in multiple years. Our scholars come from all across the country, and our award winners currently represent all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Carson Scholarship winners have attended more than 450 colleges and universities, and have received more than $3 million in scholarship funds to help finance their education.
The Ben Carson Reading Project has also enjoyed similar success. Through partnerships with individuals, corporations, and foundations, over $850,000 has been invested into creating and maintaining Ben Carson Reading Rooms. Over 100 Reading Rooms have been established in schools across the country.
Our 501(c)(3) non-profit programs are financed through individual and corporate donations. Over 90 cents of every dollar contributed is directly invested into our educational programs. The Carson Scholars Fund (CSF) is independent of any political affiliation and committed to the non-partisan work of improving education, promoting literacy, and rewarding academic excellence--endeavors that transcend political ideology. Dr. and Mrs. Carson, the co-founders of the CSF, remain committed to supporting our nation’s young scholars, and will remain active, as appropriate, in their CSF roles, while insuring the organization’s independence.
