Bart Fennemore

Year First Awarded the Carson Scholarship: 1998

Bart Fennemore was named a Carson Scholar in 1998. Since then, he has committed himself to pursuing a career in science education and instructional innovation spaces. After graduating from high school, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Delaware in 2001, followed by a Master of Education in Applied Technology in Education from Wilmington University in 2010. Bart is currently working towards his Doctor of Philosophy in Career and Technical Education from Utah State University and expects to graduate in 2028 or 2029.

For over 21 years, Bart has served as a secondary science teacher and instructional technology leader. He has worked closely with the Delaware Department of Education on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to improve accessibility to technology solutions. Bart actively implements digital learning tools into his classroom, using technology and digital resources to support in-person, blended and remote learning environments. This approach allows students to learn how to use these tools responsibly and experience new technology in STEM fields.

From 2013-2017, Bart was a mentor for the NOYCE Scholarship program with Delaware State University. In this role, he mentored pre-service math and science teachers and provided feedback on capstone lesson presentations. He was also a member of his school district’s math/science council where he worked with K-12 educators to provide feedback on the changes in curriculum and advised for the Science Olympiad at the high school where he currently teaches.

These days, not only is Bart a high school science teacher, but he is also an adjunct professor at Delaware Technical Community College. As an adjunct professor, Bart manages online courses, facilitates blended and hybrid science instruction, and collaborates with faculty to create ways for laboratory and course materials to maintain their rigorous content while being presented in an online or hybrid format.

Bart is a regular attendee of Avenue United Methodist Church. He is also an ordained Chaplain through the International Fellowship of Chaplains. In his free time Bart enjoys reading “The Alchemy of Air” and “The Demon Under the Microscope” by Thomas Hager as well as Joe Schwarcz’s books. He also enjoys watching shows like Mr. Robot, Psych, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Dead Like Me, and Pushing Daisies. Bart enjoys many different genres of music and has recently been listening to Barns Courtney, Johnny Jane, and Therapie TAXI.

Bart’s advice to our current scholars is, “Most of the scholars that the Carson Scholars Fund selects have likely already figured this out, but make sure you are well rounded. Experience a lot of different things (subjects, sports, hobbies), you may not yet be sure where your passions lie or if you can blend them together in your collegiate studies or professional life. Additionally, well-rounded individuals are like marbles and will be able to roll anywhere, but those who have only honed the one area they thought they excelled at run the risk of becoming paperweights unable to adapt to new situations.”
