Cullowhee Valley School in Cullowhee, NC Reading Room Opening
Students at Cullowhee Valley School in Cullowhee, North Carolina are “Diving Into Reading.” On Monday, October 10, the students, staff and special guests gathered to celebrate the opening of their Think Big Reading Room. During the ceremony, the day’s musical selections centered on reading. The Cullowhee Valley School seventh and eighth grade chorus sang “When You’re Reading” and the school’s second and fourth graders performed a choreographed version of the song, “It’s My Book.” After the rousing ceremony, guests were treated to a book character parade. The event concluded with the cutting of the ribbon and the unveiling of the aquatic-themed reading room.
Construction of the reading room began last May. Tammy Cabe, the school’s media coordinator, recruited volunteers and staff members to help create the reading room. This dedicated group spent hours paying attention to every detail. Ms. Cabe recalls, “I can’t believe what this room has transformed into. I remember when the area was just a storage room in the back of the library. Now it is an under the ocean reading haven. The kids love it.”
One thing that makes a reading room so special is that it brings people together, and the Cullowhee Valley School reading room is no exception. The Cullowhee Valley School’s Think Big Reading Room is proudly sponsored by Gordon and Cheri Martin. The Martins know how important learning to read is and have made plans to return to the school to read to the students.
