Dr. Carson Keynote Speaker at 61st National Prayer Breakfast

The 61st National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton on Thursday, February 7 had 3,500 attendees from 160 countries! Dr. Ben Carson was the keynote speaker, selected by a committee composed of members of the House and Senate. The event was co-chaired by Senators Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.).

After prayers and Bible readings from Washington officials, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY); Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Chief of Naval Operations; Interior Secretary Ken Salazar; Reps. Louie Gohmert (R) of Texas and Janice Hahn (D) of California; and Sen. Elizabeth Dole.  Andrea Bocelli delivered a stirring rendition of “Holy Art Thou,” just prior to the keynote speech.

Dr. Carson began with four intriguing verses from the book of Proverbs in the Bible.  His focus during the speech was identifying the problems our country currently faces and sharing ideas on how to solve them: by working together and exchanging ideas constructively, not through the veil of political correctness.

The idea of coming together as a country was the principle idea with which President Obama began his remarks.  He mentioned that in the Bible book of Hebrews, it states that without faith it is impossible to please God.  And he also stated that ALL Americans have a deep faith in our nation. You could hear in his voice how moving his unique experience was of placing his hands on the Bibles of two historical giants: President Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. during his swearing in. This caused him to reflect on the humility of these two great leaders, and how that component of their lives helped to make them great.  The President stated that his hope is that we would all try to be humble every day…not just at the prayer breakfast, but have faith, and open our hearts and minds to continue the legacy.

The breakfast concluded with “Ave Maria” by Bocelli and a heartfelt prayer by Olympic gold medalist Gabrielle Douglas.
