It was an exciting day for Warford Elementary students as their Ben Carson Reading Room was unveiled on May 8, 2012. Warford Elementary was one of three Kansas City reading room’s sponsored by The Hearst Foundations.
Outside the school, their Ben Carson Reading Room – THINK BIG banner was proudly displayed. Principal Urban Ray led the school-wide assembly, which included students, faculty, family, friends, and local supporters in attendance. The message was clear, “Read to Succeed.”
The Warford “Reading Room Choir” took the stage and then guest speaker Deputy Superintendent Dr. Everlyn Williams delivered an inspirational message to the audience.
Superintendent Dr. Marjorie Williams and Board President Bonnaye Mims also said a few words about the impact of reading.
A drawing was held during the ceremony and students received a variety of gifts, including Ben Carson Reading Project drawstring bags to hold the students favorite books!
Then it was time to cut the ribbon and officially unveil the reading room.
The students enjoyed the bright colors of blue and red throughout the room, especially the chairs. Boards and walls delivered the message THINK BIG and even Warford Rockets were on display!
Special thanks to The Hearst Foundations!
