In observation of the 2nd Annual Ben Carson Reading Day on Monday, November 12, 2007, local author, Robyn Ringgold, Iraqi Veteran, Paul Blitz, and Candy and Sonya Carson teamed up to read to students at Graceland Park/O’Donnell Heights.
The students at Graceland Park/O’Donnell Heights Elementary/Middle School are encouraged to visit the Ben Carson Reading Room everyday! Every child keeps a reading log and are asked to complete a book report. Thanks to the vision and commitment of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, we are able to make a difference in the lives of the children in Baltimore City. The Graceland Park Reading Room, sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, was opened September 12, 2002. This Reading Room capitalizes on Grandparent involvement.
A decade later, students are still enjoying their Ben Carson Reading Room. Recently, a middle school student at Graceland Park/O’Donnell Heights Elementary/Middle said, “Thank you for our Ben Carson Reading Room books. We appreciate them very much. Reading is a fun thing that I enjoy, it’s my hobby. I know that many people will benefit from the books that you have donated to my school. Reading is enjoyed by many people in my school so they will be really thankful just like me. Books are important because from them you learn a lot. We will read them and learn from them. Thanks again for the books and for remembering us and our education.”
