2024 National Day of Reading
Monday, November 18, 2024
The Ben Carson Reading Project is excited to celebrate the 19th Annual National Day of Reading on Monday, November 18. This year’s featured story is The Man with the Violin by Kathy Stinson. The story, based on an actual event, took place in a Washington, DC subway station. Joshua Bell, a world-renowned classical violinist dressed as a street entertainer, performed a 45-minute free concert. While most commuters hurriedly walked past, only seven people stopped to listen, and most of them were children. Children are curious by nature and observe the minutia of everyday events. This story reminds both young and old to take a moment to look around at the sights and sounds that surround us daily. Children can also learn the commonalities between a book and music. Just like a book has a story that unfolds with each page, music tells a story through notes and rhythms. Whether listening to music or reading a book, young students will discover the hidden messages and feelings that make both activities meaningful.
To observe the literacy event, CSF reading room school partners and interested parents will be able to view the story via the CSF website during the week of November 18. Reading room school partners will also receive three exciting children’s books to add to their reading room collection.
