Jackson Alternative School

Marianna, FL

On Thursday, December 19, 2013 the Ben Carson Reading Project began a new chapter.  Students, teachers, administrators and community members gathered to celebrate the opening of the first Ben Carson Reading Room in the “Sunshine State” at Jackson Alternative School in Marianna, Florida.

For the past several months, the reading room has been a labor of love for staff and community members. The team spent countless hours after school and on the weekends creating the jungle-like reading oasis.  Students were not disappointed when they had the opportunity to experience the reading room for the first time.

Colorful murals featuring jungle animals and bamboo cover the walls. The room has several seating areas, a thatched roof, decorative rug and, live and faux plants. A stuffed lion, monkey and zebra provide the perfect reading companions.  With over 700 books to choose from, students will be able to read about the jungle and just about anything else that might spark their imagination.

Not having a school library, this Ben Carson Reading Room is a dream come true for Jackson Alternative School students.

This Ben Carson Reading Room was sponsored through the generosity of members of the Marianna community.
