On Friday, September 28, 2012, Looscan Elementary students – home of the Lions had something to R-O-O-A-A-R-R about – the opening of their school’s Ben Carson Reading Room! Local community members, parents, students, and, staff members congregated to officially open the reading room and to celebrate the students’ summer reading accomplishments.
A whimsical mural inspired by Dr. Seuss greets students when they enter the reading room. Students can lounge on the rug or snuggle up with a good book in a rocking chair.
The reading room has special meaning for members of the Student Council. Last spring, Student Council members attended the Scholastic Warehouse where they carefully selected the books that would line the shelves in the reading room.
The Ben Carson Reading Room at Looscan Elementary is sponsored by The Hearst Foundations and is the first of three reading rooms to open in the Houston Independent School District.
