SENSE Charter School’s “Wonderland”

Even Alice would be amazed at this Reading Room! The organizers had the entire student body vote on the design of the Reading Room at SENSE Charter School in Indianapolis, Indiana.  It took only one ballot for the vote to come in with “Wonderland” as the prevailing theme. And art teacher, William Phillips had the opportunity to try his hand as a muralist, seeking and receiving input from students all through the design process. The detail this young man put into the mural rivals any of the great masters. After working full days at the school, he put in over 90 hours of painting to create the full 20 x 8-foot wall mural! At the bequest of the students, the wall depicts several select characters, including a dinosaur, a troll under a bridge and a unique sloth-like creature in a tree…each relaxing with a book!

Comfortable spots for children to settle in for a cozy reading experience besides bean bag seats, include egg-shaped chairs, complete with a pull-down cover for a completely private spot to enjoy a book, and tufted round ottomans fit for royalty, each with netting suspended from a crown frame near the ceiling encircling the ottoman yielding a cozy spot for children to travel to faraway imaginary places as they read!

Many thanks to our donor, Indiana University School of Medicine, for making this reading room dream a reality! We appreciate your generosity and dedication to the future of our children.
